Physiognomy is the interpretation of outward appearance, especially the features of the face to discover a person’s predominant temper and character. It has also been used as a kind of divination and is often associated with astrology.
Some of the features of the head gestures that are pointed out in the ‘physiognomonica’ written by Aristotle are,
Men who have large fore heads are slow to move.
Small fore heads are fickle.
Rounded and bulging out fore heads are quick tempered.
The straight eyebrows show softness of disposition.
The curved eyebrows towards the nose exhibit a sign of harshness.
Eyebrows drawn together are jealousy.
Eyebrows curve out toward the temples have humor and dissimulation.
Thus we communicate more with our faces than any other creature. Each face is the map of the past, present and feature. The present reflects our health while reading the face. Man is read in his face. Over a thousand different facial expressions are anatomically possible. But few expressions have a real meaning. According to some scientists some expressions are universal. Face is the focal site of emotion. So let’s see the face gestures in my next post.
